This Thursday evening in the quaint little village of New York City, Julia Othmer, the mesmerizingly sultry singer/songwriter will be riding into town tucked under the wings of a Southwest jet. She will be performing at Rockwood Music Hall (196 Allen St. New York, NY) at 7PM sharp. If you haven¹t heard of her, it may be because she has been diligently working on her new album for the last few years on the sunny and less immediate coast.
Formerly a Kansas City native, Julia has put her pillow in New York, Boston, Philadelphia, some gondola in Colorado and finally Los Angeles, the city of lights and traffic, where she currently lives with her little white piano, her rock star and her cat Cosmo. Julia¹s musical musings are so diverse that they become quite elusive to the simple description. Perhaps the best way to explain it would be if Nora Jones, Tom Waits, Billy Holiday and Lyle Lovett had a musical orgy and let you watch behind a curtain of burning lace and a whiskey waterfall. I¹ll bring the unfiltered cigarettes, you bring your soul.

On Thursday, December 9, singer/songwriter Julia Othmer performed an exclusive concert at the Rockwood Music Hall in New York City's hip Village area. She only does a few live performances a year, usually on the West Coast, so it was a special treat for the small audience to come in from the brittle cold to see her perform her hour-set in the intimate venue.

She sang a handful of songs from her critically acclaimed debut album Oasis Motel, as well as new songs "Round and Round" and "Whoever Says." She seemed at ease and relaxed at the piano, as if it was a good friend, and had a self-assured banter with the crowd. Her singing voice was strong and uncompromising, her playing direct. While the lyrics of the songs were solid, there could have been more of a variety of songs performed, a peppering of faster-paced tunes in the repertoire. However, it's good that this gifted songwriter is slowly hitting the performance circuit again, as straight-ahead music is always needed. She announced that she has a new CD coming out next year, and, since it's been four years since here debut CD was released, this is long-overdue and anticipated by appreciators of well-written, jazzy ballads. In the words of Julia, "raise your glass" to simple, elegant music.

I was lucky enough to be in New York City during a performance by L.A.'s Julia Othmer <http://www.myspace.com/juliaothmer> . She is a singer/songwriter with a cute, funky attitude and haunting pipes that leave listeners in awe. Once I escaped the burning cold of the city and ducked into the dim-lit, intimate setting of Rockwood Music Hall, I caught Julia's set and heard some of her new music as well. She kept the audience in good spirits by the witty stories she told about the meaning behind each of her songs, which I though was rather unique. She captivated listeners with the dramatic pounding of the piano keys and passionate singing. Othmer's new music should be coming out in early 2011, so stay tuned.
